Mutual Recognition


We’re working to ensure that your hard-earned skills and experience are widely recognized around the world.

As a member province of CPHR Canada, CPHR BC & Yukon is represented through the North American Human Resources Management Association (NAHRMA) and the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA).

We are pleased to have agreements in place with other human resources jurisdictions across the globe. This allows members of CPHR BC & Yukon and collaborating organizations to acknowledge each other’s CPHR-equivalent designations as having met the standard requirements and thus, mutually recognized. Mutual recognition enables HR professionals to have their qualifications acknowledged and respected across different regions of the world.

These organizations include:

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in the UK

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has been building its community of people professionals for over 100 years in the United Kingdom. Through an agreement, both organizations will mutually recognize each organization’s certification programs: CPHR and Chartered MCIPD.

To earn the Chartered MCIPD credential, CPHR BC & Yukon members must:

Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) Sri Lanka

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) Sri Lanka is the regulatory body for the practice of human resources management in Sri Lanka. Having signed an MoU, both organizations will recognize each other’s certification programs: CPHR and MCIPM or FCIPM.

CPHR BC & Yukon members looking to receive the MCIPM or FCIPM certification should:

  • Obtain membership with CPHR BC & Yukon
  • Request CIPM Sri Lanka to provide confirmation of membership in good standing to us by email.

Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) of Nigeria

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in USA

Please note that applications for the SHRM Pathway Tutorial program is currently paused, as the SHRM Exam Development Team is working to update its content. This will not affect pending applications that are already in review.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), based in USA, is the world’s largest HR professional society. There is a mutual recognition agreement in place to recognize each organization’s certification programs (the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources credential – CPHR, and SHRM’s Certified Professional – SHRM-CP, and Senior Certified Professional – SHRM-SCP credentials).

CPHR members have the opportunity to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential by completing SHRM’s Certification Pathway.

The SHRM Certification Pathway is a series of steps eligible participants complete to obtain a SHRM credential. The core of the process is an online tutorial that provides an overview of the SHRM Competency Model and explores how the competency model supports your professional development.

The SHRM Certification Pathway will be offered to current CPHR credential holders who:

  • Hold the CPHR designation and are in good standing
  • Review and agree to the SHRM Certification Candidate Agreement, SHRM Bylaws, Code of Ethics, and SHRM Privacy Policy
  • Complete the SHRM Certification Pathway Tutorial

Applicants who complete the above process and have a minimum of 3 years of professional HR experience can receive the SHRM-CP credential.

Applicants who complete the above process and have a minimum of 6 years professional HR experience, will receive the SHRM-SCP credential.

To have your CPHR designation recognized as SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, applicants must:

  • Meet all of the eligibility requirements
  • Complete SHRM Pathway Application
  • Complete SHRM Certification Pathway Tutorial

To have your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recognized with a CPHR designation, applicants must:

  • Obtain membership with CPHR BC & Yukon
  • Request SHRM send confirmation of your designation details to our office

CPHR BC & Yukon members can transfer their designation across Canada through a CPHR Association Transfer.
